Holy Crap

I learned how to swim before I could walk. I taught both kids how to swim before they could walk too. I love to be in any kind of water, but mostly I like my water salty and wavy. I’m not a strong swimmer or a fast swimmer, however, I am a confident swimmer. I know when I am tired and when it is time for me to come in.
When I was 22 I went to Saint Martin. I’d been there a couple of times before and I was comfortable with the island and the waves. I went out and was swimming just off the sandbar when suddenly the surf caught me. I got pulled by the undertow and couldn’t find the surface. I scraped my knees on the sand and shells. When I thought I was headed for air I ended up with a mouth full of seawater. I was tossed in the surf like a piece of seaweed. Those moments changed my relationship with the ocean forever.
I went back to St. Martin years later and swam in the very same spot. Getting back on the proverbial bike didn’t really cure me. I will only swim if the water is calm and I hug the shoreline close. I am a wary swimmer now.
