That One Smile

a Thursday Theme entry

She waits for the storm to end. She knows that she is powerless to make it stop. Over the past few months she has learned that she can not put an end to his whirling, pounding, and crying. She has tried to be soothing. She has scolded. She has tried to distract.

Now, she knows better. She calmly waits in his peripheral vision. She waits until the clouds break. When she sees that one smile cross his face amongst the tears she knows his tantrum is over. She never expected to be schooled in the art of patience by a toddler. Parenthood is weird.

A Hero’s Journey

a Thursday Theme entry

I never knew either of my grandfathers. My maternal grandfather died 6 months before they were married, my paternal grandfather died shortly after I was born. When I met The Mister’s grandfather, I immediately adopted him as my own. He fit the archetype with his shock of thick, white, unruly hair and an “I don’t care what you think of me” attitude.

I was fortunate to share Sunday afternoons with him for 3 years. During those visits to the nursing home the details of his life unfolded before us. His beloved wife was there too. Listening intently as he spilled his story. We had the forethought to capture a part of his story on tape.

When he was 12 or so, things became unbearable for Jews in rural Russia. His parents and his younger siblings stayed on as they urged him and his older sister to try to come to New York. He had two older sisters who had made their way to Brooklyn already. They were to join the sisters here.

The two set out and headed West, picking up small jobs along the way. They slept in barns. They made a cave their home for a winter as they watched the armies of WWI march across Poland. They were cold and hungry as well as ill-clothed. People helped them along the way, but mostly, they were shadows.

Eventually, they both made it to Antwerp where they managed to scrape together enough money to make the passage to America. These two teenagers had traversed a continent using only their cunning and wits to guide them.

 a Thursday Theme entry

As a college freshman in (gasp!) 1978, CSNY’s Deja Vu album was probably the most important piece of equipment you could unload into your dorm room. This album, along with Pink Floyd’s The Wall, Grateful Dead’s Terrapin Station, The Rolling Stone’s Some Girls , David Bowie’s Diamond Dogs and yes, Talking Heads ‘77 were the sound tracks of my freshman year.

These albums were played endlessly on our Technics turntables and blasted through speakers the size of coffins. We didn’t only listen to the vinyl, dissecting it note for note in the wee hours, we incorporated it into our psyches. We went to concerts too. I saw most of the above bands during my freshman year. My concert tickets were paid with money I earned as a waitress in a greasy spoon on campus, Cosmo’s Pizza. I worked the Tuesday night shift there for all four years of my college career.

Some kids play sports in college, some join the Greek system, some participate in clubs or organizations. Not me, my extracurricular activity was Cosmo’s. I was friends with the other waitresses and we socialized outside work. We hung out with the delivery and grill guys. We got stoned in the walk in fridge and the owner would bitch incessantly. We would play pranks on Lenny the pizza guy, putting plastic spiders on the dough balls when they were rising.

Cosmo’s was a busy spot and a waitressing job there was a coveted position. The money was really good after tips. It was a noisy diner/pizza joint that served food to (mostly) drunk college kids. The Album Oriented Rock station played on the sound system, which couldn’t be heard over the din. Every so often, the owner, George, would boom “turn that up, that’s the song!” It was Our House. The entire diner would sing along, even cranky Lenny.

Quirky

a Thursday Theme entry

I can’t leave the house until all the beds are made. Also, there can be no dishes left in the sink. I’m weird like that.

Yet, when I am in the kitchen I leave cabinets, the refrigerator door and the dishwasher open. My shins and head are rife with bumps and bruises that should have taught me to close a door by now. I’m weird like that.

I eat soup, cereal and ice cream with a tea spoon. I use a soup spoon for chili and rice. I’m weird like that.

I have an involuntary twitch in my cheek that happen whenever I peel a sticker from its backing. I’m weird like that.

I’m really sensitive to the smell of mold. I am nauseated and have to leave the room. I’m weird like that.

I talk to myself when I draw. Sometimes I tell jokes, to myself. I’m weird like that.

Hall & Oates - What’s Going On

On the 20th anniversary of Earth Day (1990) I saw Hall & Oates perform this song live in Central Park. Also appearing at that concert were The B-52’s, Edie Brickell and The New Bohemians, The Roches and Mahlatini & The Mahotella Queens. It was a glorious day and the music was outstanding. One of my favorite concerts.

Unfortunately, I could not find the 1990 recording online. This was recorded in Vancouver. It’s still a great cover of a great song. Some songs are just made to be recycled.

What Doesn’t Kill You Makes You Stronger

a Thursday Theme entry

A brain aneurysm left me with daily headaches which are controlled through medication for the rest of my life. Physically, what didn’t kill me has not made me stronger. I am sensitive to any fluctuations in weather, light, sound; any slight change will ramp up my headache to near-migraine level. Add in a seizure disorder (we don’t know of it happened before, during or after the aneurysm) and I am banned from arcades and discos for life. Physically, I am not strong.

What the aneurysm did was make me stronger emotionally. The Mister always comments on how tough I can be. I probably have a higher threshold for irritations and pain than him. Maybe it is my personality, but I tend to brush things off easily. I take several moments of joy for myself.

You hear it all the time from people who have won the staring contest with death: we are so happy to be here we wouldn’t want to change a thing.

• half dozen antique fishing reels

Do I really need these nick-knacks to survive? Probably not. But they feed my soul. It is a different kind of need.

Faster!

a Thursday Theme entry

I’m not normally a “lead foot” when I drive, except between 7:25 and 7:33 AM, which is my drive time to catch a 7:36 train.

Occasionally, The Mister drives me to the station because it just works better logistically. He is a great driver. He is extremely confident and sharp witted behind the wheel. I love being a passenger when he drives, except when we are going to the train station.

Knowing that the train will leave whether I am there or not makes me rush in the morning. This knowledge has the opposite effect on The Mister’s driving. The 3 mile trip with him at the wheel is akin to a leisurely Sunday drive in a 1947 Packard. There’s a family of geese on the side of the road? We stop to take pictures. Oh look! There’s a school bus 3 blocks away. Let’s wait until it passes. See that granny up the street? Why don’t we see if she needs help?

The only thing I can do is press my right foot on my imaginary gas pedal and say “faster, faster, FASTER!”
